Therapy For First Responders
Support for First Responders
First Responders have unique pressures, repetitively exposed to critical incidents, chronic stress, and moral injury. We specialize in providing trauma-informed psychotherapy to individuals working in high‑stress, high‑risk roles, with extensive experience supporting police officers, firefighters, and paramedics across our community (Halton & Hamilton regions).
We also offer comprehensive psychological assessments through collaboration with a registered Clinical Psychologist.
Defining First Responders Trauma & Operational Stress Injuries
First responders are repetitively exposed to high-stress situations that activate their nervous system. Chronic activation can lead to post‑traumatic stress-related symptoms, stress injuries, burnout, emotional numbing, sleep disruption, irritability, hypervigilance, or difficulties in relationships.
We utilize the triphasic model of trauma recovery to inform our treatment approach initially focusing on Safety & Stabilization (i.e. immediate safety, regulation, and coping skills). We then move to trauma processing (utilizing EMDR or CPT), before gradually moving into integration and connection (returning back to your day-to-day life).
Critical Incident Response & CISM Services
TMA Psychotherapy provides Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) services for first responders and organizations following traumatic or high-impact events.
Monica completed CISM training through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) in assisting individuals and group crisis interventions. She has experience in delivering both group and individual crisis interventions in accordance with ICISF.
Services include:
- Demobilization immediate “cool-down” process following large-scale or high-intensity incidents
- Crisis Management Briefing (CMB) large, varied group format (community or organization) info meeting
- Defusing interventions delivered shortly after an incident to stabilize and support personnel
- Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) structured 7-phase intervention for teams impacted by traumatic events
These interventions are designed to support psychological stabilization, normalize stress responses, reduce the risk of longer-term injury, all while facilitating connection to additional supports.
CISM services can be provided as a standalone response or integrated with ongoing therapeutic support where appropriate.
